UNIVERSITY OF WISDOM

It is years later in the Palace of Origin. He, Amazing Grace and Victor sit on their thrones taking care of the business of the kingdom.

Origin, turning to new business, says, “Now for Castle Glade. What do we hear of it?”

“Still in darkness, Father” Victor replies compassionately.

“Oh, the poor thing!” exclaims Amazing Grace, “to be in darkness for all this time. It must be dreadful.”

“Well,” a determined Origin says, “I have something in mind."

Sitting in the University Lecture Hall observing his neighbor writing vehemently in a yellow legal size notebook, a handsome sophisticated young man leans forward and awkwardly interrupts.

“I noticed you were sitting there all alone and I don’t mean to be rude but my name is Awareness.”

The young man stops writing, turns around to see who is talking to him, smiles and says.

“Hello, my name is Curiosity. What is your purpose?”

Awareness is taken aback by the question, “Purpose, I have no purpose. At least I am not conscious of having one. Why do you ask?

“I don’t mean to be nosy,” Curiosity answers, “I am just interested.”

“Why does that interest you?.” Awareness asks.

“I find it extraordinarily uplifting when I learn about the purposes of others.” Curiosity replies. “It kind of fulfills my purpose.”

“That’s interesting,” Awareness smiles, “I guess it’s something that I should think about.”

“I don’t know how anyone could go through life without knowing their purpose.” Curiosity says.

“You know,” Awareness says with surprise, “I never thought of it like that.”

“There is a poster in the cafeteria.” Curiosity informs Awareness, “that has a picture of a target on it, with a caption below that reads, ‘Sin is missing the mark.’ But if you don’t know what the mark is how can you hit it?”

“Well, that’s quite a revelation!” Awareness exclaims, “I wouldn’t even know what to aim at if I didn’t know the target. I guess I have been shooting my arrows at the wrong targets all my life. What is your purpose?

Curiosity answers with no hesitation. “I possess a wholesome desire to be informed. I am amazed at the complexity of this world. I want to know all about it. Who created it? What is the purpose of its creation? Where did we come from? When did it all begin? Why were we created? How was it done?

Who, What, Where, When, Why and How? When I was first born they nursed me to maturity, all that I am now I owe to them.”

Just then the door to the classroom flies open and hurrying to her desk the instructor enters.

“I am sorry that I am late”. She apologizes. “My name is Wisdom.”

For having a name like wisdom you would think that she would be old, lifeless and ugly as dirt but she is young, vibrant and beautiful.

She is wearing a sheer robe of many colors that looks like a soft rainbow flowing over her body. Her hair drapes over her shoulders sparkling like golden glitter. Her smile lights up the room with a great light and her eyes sparkle like the stars against the blackness of an August night in the middle of the desert. When she opens her mouth to speak her ruby lips part like the red sea and out of it pours the blessings of her very nature. Her words are life and her breath is sweet. Its fragrance fills the lecture hall like the scent of lilacs fills a summer courtyard.

“Good Morning” Wisdom begins. “I thought I would begin by telling you a little about myself”. She steps around to the front of her desk, stands quietly for a moment then lifts her hands, holding her arms open wide, as if she was about to sing a song of praise. She looks up, far beyond the beautiful mosaic covered ceiling, past the clear blue majestic skies, gazing farther and further into the star filled heavens as if looking beyond time itself and begins to speak.

“Happy is the man that finds me and blessed is the man who builds a dwelling for me in his heart.

My profit is better than the profit of silver

And my gain better than fine gold

I am more precious than jewels

And nothing you desire compares with me

Long life is in my right hand

And in my left hand are riches and honor.

My ways are pleasant ways

And all my paths are peace.

I am a tree of life to those who take hold of me

And happy are all who hold me fast.”

After Wisdom finished speaking a silence filled the Lecture Hall.

It was a sacred silence and yet it was awkward. It was as if nothing more could nor should be said. Wisdom stood silently standing with her head bowed for a moment giving it time for her words to sink in. Then she lifted her head and smiled and asked,

“Does anyone have any questions?”

The awkward silence continued. And Wisdom spoke again

“Come, come now, you mustn’t be timid. I am sure that you have many questions to ask.”

Awareness breaks the silence. “What is this class going to be about?”

The other students moan as if Awareness had just asked the stupidest question imaginable.

Wisdom smiles and answers, “It is about discovering your purpose”.

Awareness looks at Curiosity in awe as if Curiosity knows something that he doesn’t. Curiosity simply smiles as Awareness thinks to himself, Boy am I in the wrong class.
